Private by design

EXIF data is read and displayed entirely in your browser. The image file is never uploaded.

Many web-shared and social media images have EXIF data already stripped.
PNG and WebP files typically don't contain standard EXIF metadata.
View-only — does not edit or remove metadata from the file.

Background

What EXIF records, and why it matters

EXIF is written by the camera at the moment of capture and travels inside the image file. It commonly carries the make and model of the camera or phone, the lens, the full exposure settings, and the date and time down to the second.

The field that matters most for privacy is location. Phones with location services enabled write GPS coordinates and altitude directly into the photo, precise enough to identify a building. That data is invisible in every normal photo viewer and travels with the file whenever it is sent as an attachment or uploaded somewhere that does not strip it.

Major social platforms generally strip EXIF on upload, which has taught people that photos are safe to share. Email attachments, cloud folder links, messaging apps that send 'as a file', and direct downloads from a personal site typically do not strip anything.

Make / Model: The camera or phone that took the picture, often identifying a specific device model.
DateTimeOriginal: When the shutter fired, per the device clock — distinct from the file's modification date, which changes when the file is copied or edited.
GPSLatitude / GPSLongitude: Where the picture was taken. Present whenever location services were enabled for the camera, and accurate enough to identify an address.
GPSAltitude: Height above sea level at capture, which on a multi-storey site can narrow the location further.
Exposure settings: Shutter speed, aperture, ISO and focal length — useful for photographers, harmless for privacy.
Orientation: How the image should be rotated for display. Software that ignores it shows the photo sideways.

Why does my image show no EXIF data?
